Bert Michael "Mike" Whorton, age 78, formerly of Fork Ridge Road, Moundsville, passed away on May 6, 2024 at the VA Medical Center in Clarksburg, WV.
Mike was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Sally Ann (Francis) Whorton.
He is survived by his son Luke and his wife Lee Ann, grandchildren Kaleigh and Gavin of Morgantown, WV; daughter Leslie of Moundsville, WV and her fiance Phil Hartman; sister Jane Ann Harlan of Ravenswood, WV.
Mike was born on September 5, 1945 to the late Bert and Mary (Alexander) Whorton of Center Street, Moundsville.
A Moundsville High School graduate, Mike went on to receive an undergraduate degree from West Liberty State University. He then earned a graduate degree from the University of Arizona in Tuscon.
Mike was drafted into the United States Army in 1968. He proudly served his country with the 285th Military Police Company in Baumholder, Germany. For distinguishing himself throughout his military service, he was awarded the Army Commendation Medal.
After an honorable discharge from the Army, he went on to earn his law degree from West Virginia University, where he was published in the West Virginia Law Review.
Mike spent over 20 years practicing law in Moundsville, which included an appointment as the City Attorney. He retired from his law practice in 2001 following a serious heart attack and bypass surgery.
He was passionate about studying military history, especially the Civil War and the Battle of Little Bighorn. Mike also loved reading, crossword puzzles, and the West Virginia Mountaineers.
