James Harlan Kelley, age 84, of Washington Lands, Moundsville, passed away Thursday, April 25, 2024 at home.
He was born in Glen Dale, WV in 1939 and was the son of Ezekiel and Margie Bailey Kelley of Washington Lands, Moundsville.
He met Elizabeth "Liz" Schlingloff in the 1960's while he was a lifeguard at Jones Beach, NY and she was a beachgoer. They had a love of the beach and the ocean in common, and they married shortly thereafter. He became an engineer and then a High School math teacher in West Islip, NY, and upon retirement had returned to Washington Lands for the remainder of his life. He loved long swims under sunny skies, in either outdoor pools or open water, and was sometimes accompanied by his son Jamie on such swim outings. He instilled in his son a profound appreciation and love of such pursuits which Jamie carries to this day.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife: Liz Kelley and an infant daughter: Nancy Kate Kelley.
Survivors include his son: Jamie Kelley of Fort Worth, TX and his brother: John Kelley of Biddeford, ME.
Private interment will be held at Greenlawn Memorial Park, New Martinsville, WV. Arrangements entrusted to Grisell Funeral Home & Crematory, 400 Jefferson Ave., Moundsville, WV.
