JON SAFFELL

Jon Robert Saffell, 84, of Glen Dale, WV, died Saturday, May 25, 2024 at Good Shepherd Nursing Home in Wheeling, WV.

He was born November 25, 1939 in Glen Dale, WV; the son of the late Robert C. and Mildred Wallace Saffell.

Jon graduated from Moundsville High School in 1957. He attended West Liberty State College while working at Fostoria Glass Company where he was employed for 29 years. After Fostoria closed in 1986, he was self-employed for 8 years doing business as Design Prototypes. In 1994, he began employment as product designer/sculptor with the Fenton Art Glass Company in Williamstown, WV. He retired from Fenton in 2004. Jon was a gifted sculptor, exhibiting and winning awards at numerous art shows.

In 1981, Jon was elected and served six years as a councilman for the City of Glen Dale. In 1987, he was elected as Mayor of Glen Dale, a position he served an additional six years.

Jon was a member of the Marshall County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, Moundsville Lions Club, served on the original Moundsville-Glen Dale Rails-to-Trails committee, and was a member of the Reynolds Memorial Hospital Board of Directors where he was Secretary of the Board. He was an active member of Glen Dale United Methodist Church, serving as Lay Leader, usher, and long-time leader of the Donuts & Dialogue (D&D) Adult Sunday School class.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by two sisters, Sylvia Combs and Roberta Rogerson.

He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Carolyn (Nisperly) Saffell; two daughters, Jill (Jeff) Mennillo, and Julie (Dan) Peroni; seven grandchildren, Alyssa (A.B. Stump) Mennillo, Ashley (Matt Bartenschlag) Mennillo, Dax (Adrian Edwards) Mennillo, Mario (Cara) Peroni, Gino Peroni, Ava (John McFarland) Peroni, and Maria (Mason Badia) Peroni; one great-granddaughter, Alayna Bartenschlag; and several nieces and nephews.

Family will receive friends on Thursday May 30, 2024 from 4 p.m. until time of memorial service at 6 p.m. at Glen Dale United Methodist Church 700 Wheeling Ave., Glen Dale, with Reverend Jonathan Moon officiating. Private interment will be held at the convenience of the family.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of Good Shepherd for their loving care of Jon.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jon's memory to Good Shepherd Nursing Home, Amedisys Hospice, or to the charity of your choice.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Grisell Funeral Home and Crematory, 400 Jefferson Ave, Moundsville, WV.
