Maxine Kathleen Smith, 86, of Moundsville, WV, died Wednesday, May 29, 2024, in WVU Reynolds Memorial Hospital, Glen Dale, WV.
She was born June 1, 1937, in Cameron, WV, the daughter of the late George and Mildred Rush Strahl.
Maxine was a retired employee of Marshall County Schools, having worked for 30 years as a bus driver. In recent years, she enjoyed time at home with family, friends and her cat Muffin, trips to the beach, Amish Country and other locations, and restaurant and shopping outings. She was an active member of the Metropolitan Baptist Church in Wheeling.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Don W. "Whitey" Smith; a daughter-in-law, Beth Koontz; two sisters, Dorothy Blake and Flossie Otto; and two brothers, Albert "Junior" Chambers and Myrl Chambers, and a sister-in-law, Myrl's wife, Judy Chambers.
Survivors include four sons, Terry (Shirley) Koontz of Wheeling, Ron Koontz of Scheller, IL; Don (Samantha) Smith, Jr. of Charleston, WV; and Mark (Linda) Smith of Moundsville; two daughters, Patty (Randy Wiseman) Smith of Cameron and Bonnie (Bob) Verbosky of Washington, PA; and her best friend, Karen Oldfield, Moundsville; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren.
Family will receive friends at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 22, at Grisell Funeral Home in Moundsville, followed by a memorial service at noon. Friends are invited to join the family for lunch immediately following the service at the Limestone Volunteer Fire Department.
