Thomas Glen Leonard, Sr., aged 84, passed away peacefully at WVU-Ruby Memorial Hospital on June 10, 2024. Born on April 1, 1940, in Wheeling, WV, Tom was a cherished son of the late Kenneth "Mike" and Alberta (Abraham) Leonard.
Tom dedicated his professional life to AEP-Mitchell Power Plant, where he was known for his meticulous attention to detail and steadfast work ethic. Beyond his career, Tom was an avid golfer, enjoyed dancing at celebrations, and spending time with family.
A proud patriot, Tom served eight years with the US Army during the Vietnam War. His bravery and dedication earned him the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Combat Infantryman Badge.
Tom was a member of the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Wheeling, WV, and a member of the IOLA Club and CAVE Club.
His community knew him not only as a jokester who could bring smiles to any gathering but also as a dedicated former basketball coach at Cathedral and Wheeling Catholic Elementary Schools.
Tom was blessed with a loving family. He is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years, Barbara (Johnson) Leonard; their children, Carla (Roger) Bell, Thomas (Michelle) Leonard, Jr., Shawn (Tammi) Leonard, and Crystal (Rich) Jozwick. He was the proud grandfather of nine grandchildren: Mandi, Logan, Trey, Travis, Paige, Charce, Collin, Cameron, and Toby; and the great-grandfather of seven great-grandchildren. He will also be fondly remembered by his uncle Russell Abraham as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth "Mike" and Alberta (Abraham) Leonard, and his siblings, Kenneth "Junior" Leonard and Loretta Thomas.
Services to honor Thomas's life will be held at Altmeyer Funeral Homes, 154 Kruger Street, Wheeling, WV. Visitation will take place on Thursday, June 13, 2024, from 1:00 – 3:00 PM and 5:00 – 7:00 PM. The funeral service will be held on Friday at 11:00 AM.
