Leslie "Les" Jones, 84, of Wheeling, WV died peacefully July 26, 2024.
Born in Peterstown, WV, July 8, 1940, son of the late Grover Cleveland Jones and Annie Grace (Buckland) Jones.
Les attended Peterstown High School in southern West Virginia before earning several degrees from Concord College, Marshall University, Carnegie – Mellon University and West Virginia University, where he earned his doctorate of physiology and education.
Dr. Les Jones was hired at West Liberty State College in 1965, and served as Dean of Education from 1974 until his retirement, with over 30 years of service. He initiated several programs including Upward Bound and the first Big Brother Program in West Virginia.
Les was always a champion for opening the doors to education for the underprivileged. An avid Mountaineer fan (especially when they were winning), Les was a member of Kappa Delta Pi, Outstanding Young Men of America, BPOE Elks, and the prestigious "Good Ole Boys Club" at Wakim's Bar.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by several brothers: William Jones, Robert Jones, Franklin Delano Roosevelt Jones, Woodrow Wilson Jones, Pete Jones, Paul Jones, Willard Jones, Richard Jones, John Jones, Buck Jones, Tad Jones, Tom Jones, and Rufus Jones.
Survivors include his children, Jeff Jones (wife Staci), Stacy Jones Dietz (husband Gary), and Anne Jones; along with his grandchildren, Carly, Cole, Pyper, and Lincoln; his closest brother and friend Giles Jones; another brother Grover Jones Jr.; and his favorite sister, Charlotte Jones Faulkner; along with many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, July 30, 2024 from 10 a.m. until time of service at noon at Grisell Funeral Home & Crematory, 1 Ridgecrest Road, Bethlehem/Wheeling with Rev. Debra Dague officiating.
Interment in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Wheeling, followed by food and fellowship at the Italian American Club, Sycamore Ave., Elm Grove.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Youth Scholarship Committee made out to the BPOE Elks Lodge 28, 4706 Jacob St., Wheeling, WV 26003.
