James G. "Jerry" McCartney, 88, of Steubenville Ohio passed from this world on August 22, 2024 surrounded by his loving children after a brief illness.
He was born on February 29, 1936, a leap year and celebrated his birthday only once every 4 years, as he was young at heart. He was the son of the late James Edward McCartney and Georgianne Linn McCartney.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Marilyn K. Johnson, and his wife of 47 years Theresa Kelley McCartney who passed away in September 2005. Also preceding him in death was his close friend Laverne B Neeley.
Jerry was a graduate of Catholic Central High School Class of 1955 and a United States Navy Veteran. He served the City of Steubenville for over 40 years starting as a patrolman in July of 1960 and retiring as Chief of Police in 2000. To this day he is still remembered affectionately as "THE CHIEF".
Jerry was proud of his Catholic faith and his Irish heritage celebrating St. Patrick's Day every year with his shillelagh in hand, and of course his signature green hair. He was a member of Triumph of the Cross (Holy Rosary) parish.
Left to cherish his memory are his three children Kelley (Frank) Zebrasky of Canonsburg PA, Marilyn (Sis) and Andy Richardson of Wheeling West Virginia and James E. (Jim) and Mary McCartney of Myrtle Beach South Carolina. Also surviving are 7 grandchildren and 8 great-grand children, six nieces whom he loved very much and his sister in law Anne E. Nolan. We are extremely grateful for the special care and love shown to our father by our friend and caregiver Kristen Hamelin.
Calling hours will be held Thursday August 29th from 2-7 pm at the Mosti Funeral Home, Sunset Chapel 4435 Sunset Blvd. Steubenville Ohio 43952.
