William Jeffers Nelson, Sr., 90, of Wheeling, WV, passed away Monday, October 14, 2024 at his home.
He was born October 27, 1933, in Wheeling, WV, son of the late Paul Burdette Nelson, Sr. and Esther Eleanor Porter Nelson.
Bill retired after 45 years as the General Manager of the Wheeling Automobile Club (AAA). He was a past member of the Wheeling Traffic Commission, and Board of Directors at the Chambers YMCA. He was a member of the Wellness Center for many years.
He was a lifelong fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates and enjoyed many other sports. He was an avid runner and handball champion. As a young man he played for the semi-pro Patterson baseball team.
Bill was a member of the "Elm Grove Bridge Gang" a group of guys who were lifetime friends. He loved his fishing trips twice a year with his buddies. He will be long remembered for his epic picnics and parties. The most important part of his life was his family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul B. Nelson, Jr., Robert Nelson; and two sisters, Dorothy Crawford, Joanne Nelson.
Bill is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Mary Lou Burns Nelson; five children, William "Jeff" (Deborah Anne Pratt) Nelson, Susan Nelson (David) Paine, Gayle Anne (Don) Seidler, Diane Elizabeth Nelson, Ryan A. (Jenna Colbert) Nelson; five grandchildren, Benjamin Seidler, Chris Seidler, Zachariah Nelson Paine (Allison), Erin Hinebaugh, Sam (Brandi) Hinebaugh; and ten great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received on Friday, October 18, 2024 from 3-7 PM & Saturday, October 19, 2024 from 10 AM until the time of service at 11 AM at Kepner Funeral Homes, 166 Kruger Street, Wheeling, WV (304-242-2311). Interment in Greenwood Cemetery will be at the convenience of the family.
