LT. COL. ROBERT HUSS SR., USAF

“Bob,” 87 years old, passed away Monday, October 28, 2024 in Chico, California surrounded by his family. Bob was born October 2, 1937 in Wheeling, West Virginia to Elwood Harry Huss and Martha Ruth McCracken Huss. His father was a USAF pilot and being a part of a military family they moved often.

Bob was able to complete his high school education and graduate from Groveport High school. Following his passion for service and desire to join the military he joined Rotc while attending West Virginia University and joined fraternity Sigma Nu and met the love of his life, Catherine Julia Lotz. He was awarded with his Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical engineering, married Catherine on July 23, 1960 and began their own military adventures. As an officer, Bob continued to promote and was selected to obtain a Masters Degree. He was awarded his Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Wyoming University in 1965.

Bob’s military fields of expertise included, but not limited to: minuteman missiles, space communications, satellite deployment methods including space shuttle (PAM) and numerous delta rocket series.

Upon his retirement from the USAF in 1981 his expertise and knowledge was an invaluable asset and took a position with McDonnell Douglas for a second career where he stayed until 1994.

Upon his second retirement, he and Cathy built their dream home. Never one to sit idle, Bob became active in numerous organizations: MOAA (Military Officers Association of America), SIRS (Sons in Retirements), HOG (Harley Owners Group), McCHUG (Macintosh User Groups), any Veterans groups, and Butte County Search and Rescue. He loved service, giving back and continuing education (he attended Ollie- great course through CSU Chico for seniors). He was an avid golfer until he could no longer play.

Bob is survived by his soulmate Cathy, their children Robert Huss Jr “Bob” (Sonya), Kerri (Huss) Tollison (Ron), six grandchildren Michael (Olivia), Megan (Wiley), Matthew (Carrie), Ethan, Lucas, and Catalina and four great grandchildren. He is survived by his sister Judy (Chuck) and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is predeceased by his parents.

Bob’s service is planned for Monday November 11, 2024 at 3 p.m. with Military Honors at Newton- Bracewell Chico Funeral Home, 680 Camellia Way, Chico, CA.

In lieu of flowers Bob has requested donations to Butte County Search and Rescue in his honor.
