Garnett Lorraine Merinar Kilgore McGlumphy, 98, beloved mother, sister, aunt, and friend passed away at Belmont Manor in St. Clairsville, OH on December 13, 2024.
Born on March 16, 1926 in Sand Hill, WV, she was one of four children born to Myrtle Riggle and Elwood Westley Merinar.
Garnett attended Locust Grove School, a one room elementary school. In 1944, she graduated from Sherrard High School in WV. She married William A. Kilgore in 1945. They had five children and lived on a farm on Stone Church Road in Elm Grove, WV.
She loved the country life, working in her vast garden and tending to the farm animals.
She belonged to the Hilltop Community Association and served as secretary for many years. She also belonged to the Hilltop Farm Women's Club and the Sand Hill Farm Women's Club. She was a member of the Sand Hill Methodist Church since childhood. In later years, she worked in the sewing department at the Ben Franklin Store in Elm Grove, WV. She loved to quilt and made many beautiful quilts that are cherished by family and friends. Being an avid reader all her life, she instilled the love of books in all her children. After the death of her first husband, she married her high school sweetheart, Duane McGlumphy in 1978. They built a house in Sand Hill, WV close to where they grew up and enjoyed many happy years together. After Duane's death, she moved to St. Clairsville, OH to be near her daughter Barbara.
She is predeceased by her husbands; her daughter, Barbara Diane Kilgore; son, William Michael Kilgore; siblings Leota Lipscomb, Clifford E. Merinar and Arletta Williamson.
She is survived by her children, Sharon I. Mores (John), Boulder, CO; James E. Kilgore (Phyllis), Sand Hill, WV; Grace Ann Kilgore (Celesta Lee), Farragut, TN; son-in-law, Bruce Sabatino, St. Clairsville, OH; seven grandchildren, Heather, Holly, Hope, Wendy, Scott, Jessica, Willy, and many great and great-great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
Friends will be received Tuesday, December 17, 2024 from 10am until the time of service at 11am, at Kepner Funeral Home, 166 Kruger St. Wheeling, WV (304-242-2311), with Pastor Monica Salvo officiating. Interment to follow at Sand Hill Cemetery.
