JOHN HARTLEY

John L. Hartley, 89, of Moundsville, WV, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, December 7th 2024 at Peterson Hospital and Rehabilitation Center, Wheeling, WV surrounded by his daughter, grandson, and son-in-law.

He was born on May 24th 1935 at his parents home in Moundsville, WV, the last child of Harry and Lola Connor Hartley.

John was a Letter Carrier in Moundsville for 38 years, retiring in 1996. He served in the US Army for 2 years from 1955-1957.

He was a Methodist by faith and member of Calvary United Methodist Church since 1959 when he married the love of his life Barbara Miller Hartley that same year. The two were married for 60 years until her passing in 2019. In their later years, the two started attending Hillview Terrace Church of Christ, enjoying fellowship and friendship with members there, which they enjoyed so much.

In addition to his parents and beloved wife, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter they had named Lynn Ellen. Also preceding him in death were his wonderful brothers, Paul Harry, Don, and Robert (Bob) Hartley as well as beloved sisters, Jean (Hartley) Coppock, Ruth (Hartley) Lusk, and Kathalene (Hartley) Garcia Stewart. Also two half brothers, Berry and Delbert Barcus and a half sister Doris (Barcus) Fletcher.

Survivors include daughter, Diane Hartley Alderman (husband Barry) and grandson, Grant Hartley Alderman as well as a very special brother-in-law, Dr. William (Bill) Marshall, DDS (Patricia Courtney) who was like a son or brother to him and Bill's daughters, Katherine (Michael) Skocik, and Jessica (Chris) Regan. He also had many special nephews, nieces and great nephews and nieces that he thought a lot of as well as a sister-in-law, Yvonne (Bonnie) Hartley.

Also, a special thanks to Barbara Hretzok, who was dad's caregiver up until his stay at Peterson.

And thanks to his many awesome caregivers at Peterson Hospital and Nursing Facility for the special care they gave Dad. Those girls and guys really are amazing at what they do.

A graveside service and interment was held at the convenience of the family at Mount Rose Cemetery on December 8th, at 2:00 pm. The Moundsville Honor Guard conducted a military ceremony, as well as Kara Rowe was in attendance as Pastor.
