LOUIS COMER

Louis Robert “Bob” Comer, a cherished member of the Wheeling and Benwood-McMechen communities, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family, on January 8, 2025, at the age of 99.

Born on November 9, 1925, in Wheeling, WV, Bob lived a life of service, dedication, and profound impact.

Bob proudly served his country as a World War II veteran, where he showcased his athletic prowess as a Golden Glove boxer in the U.S. Navy. After his honorable service, he continued to share his love for boxing through amateur matches.

In 1955, Bob’s passion for sports led him to form the first little league baseball team in McMechen, a pioneering effort that blossomed into years of coaching success.

He guided several championship teams, notably the South Wheeling Indians, leaving a legacy of sportsmanship and mentorship for young athletes in his community.

Bob’s industrious spirit was evident in his long career with the B&O Railroad, from which he retired. His commitment to community service saw him tending bar at the PAP Club in South Wheeling, where he served as president and remained a lifetime member. Bob’s vibrant presence extended to the Fireman’s Club in McMechen and Jerry’s Bar, where he worked until his retirement at the remarkable age of 91. A dedicated public servant, he also served on the Benwood City Council, contributing to the betterment of his community.

Preceded in death by his beloved parents, Peter J. and Martha R. (Auber) Comer; his cherished wife of 50 years, Mary F. Witkowski Swanson Comer; daughters Cheryl L. Swanson Long, Cindy Swanson Goddard, Patricia Comer Wilson, and Nancy Comer Taylor; sister Margaret A. Comer Walton; brothers John J. and James A. Comer; first wife Mary A. Barnett Comer Tracy; sons-in-law John Santamarina and Bob Lufft; brother-in-law Lt. Col. John Howard; and sisters-in-law Irene Prezelweski Comer and Jean McDonald Comer.

He leaves behind a large and loving family to treasure his memory: children Mary L. (Binky) Comer Lufft, William B. Swanson, Kevin L. Witkowski, Robert A. Comer (Shannon Kelly), Tanna R. Comer Santimarino, and Kathleen E. Comer Michelucci; his sister Martha Howard; 22 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grand children; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 12, 2025, from 2-8 pm at Altmeyer Funeral Home, Benwood-McMechen Chapel, 214 Marshall St., McMechen, WV. Special Military Honors and a Fireman’s Memorial Service will begin at 7 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Monday, January 13, 2025, at 11am at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Wheeling. Interment at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Wheeling will occur at the convenience of the family.
