THOMAS GOMPERS

August 2, 1948 - January 25, 2025

Thomas Cavanaugh Gompers passed away peacefully at home on January 25, 2025. He was 76. Born in Wheeling, WV to William and Sara (Moore) Gompers, Tom lived a life defined by devotion to his family, his country, and the simple joys of life that he treasured.

A proud graduate of Wheeling Central Catholic High School in 1966, Tom soon followed the call of duty, being drafted into the U.S. Army in 1968. He served in the 57th Artillery Division in Germany during the Vietnam War. His service to his country extended beyond his time in the military as he became an active member of American Legion Post #1, where he once had the honor of serving as Commander.

After returning home, Tom continued his work at Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel, dedicating over 40 years to the company, where he earned the respect and admiration of all who knew him.

A faithful member of St. Joseph's Cathedral Parish, Tom's religious faith was the foundation upon which he built a life filled with love, humility, and service. He cherished his role as a husband, father, and grandfather, finding true joy in spending time with his wife, Lucille (Listuon) Gompers, with whom he celebrated 50 years of marriage just this past July. Together, they raised two daughters, Susan (Brian) Sarkis of Pittsburgh, PA and Julie (Paul) Rush of Cecil Township, PA, and shared in the laughter and love of their six grandchildren--Alex, Adam, Isaac, and Olivia Sarkis and Ava and Ian Rush--who brought him immeasurable happiness.

Tom's passion for American history was well known, and he spent countless hours reading, learning, and discussing the past. Yet, it was the quiet moments, like sitting on his deck on hot summer nights, grilling burgers at family cookouts, enjoying a good old movie, or relaxing by the Oglebay Park swimming pool, that truly defined his character. Tom loved his life's simple pleasures and embraced them with an infectious joy that warmed the hearts of those around him.

Tom's life was a testament to love, service, and the joys found in everyday moments--a legacy that will live on in the hearts of those who knew him. His family will remember his warmth, his quiet strength, and his deep devotion to family.

He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, William and Sara Gompers, and his brother, John Gompers.
