BERNARD McGILTON
On February 20, 2025, Bernard “Bernie” McGilton lost his ten-year battle with lung disease. His family watched as he struggled with several health issues, never complaining. Bernie was born on March 11, 1944, the son of Bernard, Sr., and Alberta (Poole) McGilton. He was predeceased by his parents; a sister Carolyn “Kay” Simmons of Alto, GA; a sister-in-law Reyna Cheslick of Woodhaven, MI; and a brother-in-law Gary Lutes of St. Clairsville, OH.
Bernie retired from Navistar (formerly International Harvester) in Indianapolis, IN, and was a proud UAW member.
Bernie leaves behind his wife of 53 years Kathy (Cheslick) McGilton, daughter Kara Dougherty (Dan Yanok), and son Jason McGilton. He was Pap to Andrew McGilton, Megan Dougherty, and Kaydyn McGilton. He is also survived by sister Joyce Lutes of St. Clairsville, OH; two brothers Mark of Pittsburgh, PA, and Kevin (Terry) of Navarre, FL; three brothers-in-law Walt (Sonny) Cheslick of Woodhaven, MI, Mark Cheslick of Moundsville, WV, and Garen Simmons of Alto, GA; and several nieces and nephews.
Per Bernie’s request, there will be no services. Bernie donated his body to WVU School of Medicine Human Gift Registry. Private arrangements have been entrusted to Altmeyer Funeral Homes Lutes & Kirby-Vance Chapel.
