Dorothy Habak West passed away on Monday, February 17, 2025 at 93 years of age in Wellsburg, WV.
She was born on July 21, 1931 to the late Alex Habak, Sr. and Mary Kotlarz Habak of South Wheeling.
Dorothy was predeceased by the love of her life and husband of 47 years, Russell R. West, who passed away on February 7, 1998. They had lived for several decades in Power, WV and then later in Warwood.
She is survived by her daughters Karen West Silverthorn (Bob) of Lancaster, MA and Mary West Blair (Brad) of Wheeling, WV; grandchildren Natalie Silverthorn of Clinton, MA; Jeremy Silverthorn (Mindy) of Fitchburg, MA; Brooke Kosar Preston (Eric) of Charleston, WV; Breanne Kosar Pompey (Tim) of Wooster, OH; and five great-grandchildren - Aiden and Carter Preston and Tucker, Addison, and Elliotte Pompey.
Dorothy graduated from Wheeling High School in 1949 and worked at her family's grocery store (Habak's Grocery) in South Wheeling until her marriage to Russell on February 25, 1951. During the 1970s, she worked for the Wheeling Linen Service for approximately a decade. Later she spent time doing what she liked best - caring for her grandchildren. She was a longtime member of the Warwood United Methodist Church.
Dorothy was predeceased by all six of her siblings: Michael A. Habak; John Habak; Anna Habak Stewart; Alex Habak, Jr.; Mary Habak Knight; and Catherine Habak Gikas. She was also predeceased by all of her in-laws: Harry J. West, Jr.; Evelyn West Charlton; North E. West; June A. West Stobbs; Jeannine E. West Salyers; Winston W. West; Robert O. West; and Linda A. West.
During her lifetime, Dorothy enjoyed bowling, reading, crafts, cake decorating, crocheting, and playing BINGO. She was a diehard fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates and enjoyed attending some of their home games with her daughter Mary and husband Brad.
She also enjoyed watching the Pittsburgh Steelers and various WVU sports events.
There are no calling hours. A private burial service will be held at Greenwood Cemetery, Wheeling, WV. A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Ann's Country Retreat at 1439 Washington Pike, Wellsburg, WV 26070 where Dorothy spent the last years of her life. Or, to the Warwood United Methodist Church at 1438 Warwood Avenue, Wheeling, WV 26003.
