JOHN GONGOLA

John W. Gongola, of Wheeling, WV, died at home on May 5, 2025, with his beloved wife of 38 years, Shar, and their loyal dog, Scooter, right by his side. He was 61.
Born in Glen Dale, WV in 1964 and raised in McMechen, John stayed rooted in the Ohio Valley all his life. He built not just one, but two successful businesses–Sweet Dreams Mattress Factory and SDI Environmental–alongside his wife and partner-in-all-things, Shar. Together, they made a life full of hard work, laughter, and love.
John was the kind of man people just liked being around– generous to a fault, wickedly witty, quick with a joke, and never one to pass up a good story or a better meal. He had a sharp mind, a warm heart, and yes, he really was as good-looking as Shar thought he was (and then some).
He is predeceased by his parents, John and Roberta Gongola; and his father-in-law, Robert C. Jones, Sr. Left to carry on his stories and his spirit are his wife Shar; his mother-in-law, Kathryn Jones; his sister, Jane Rose (Scott); his sister-in-law, Robin Giesey (Randy); and his brother-in-law, Bob Jones (Susan Fox). He also leaves behind nieces and nephews, Jessica Giesey Burr (Tim), Justin Giesey, Robbie Jones (Mallory), Jocelyn Jones, and John Rose–and great-nieces and nephews, Grace, Alesia, and Gabriel Giesey, and Chip, Chase, and Crew Jones.
True to form, John didn’t want any fuss–no service, no speeches. In keeping with his wishes, the family will gather privately to celebrate his life, share memories, and probably tell a few jokes he would’ve loved (and a few he definitely would’ve rolled his eyes at).
In lieu of mourning, we encourage you to laugh a little louder and be kind and generous whenever you get the chance. That’s what John would’ve done.
