Joyce Ann Westlake Holmes passed away in San Diego, CA on March 7, 2025 after a very long battle with Alzheimer's Disease. She was 81 years old.
Born in Wheeling, WV, to Dent and Velma Westlake of Elm Grove, she graduated from Triadelphia High School and then B.M. Spurr School of Practical Nursing. Shortly thereafter, she moved to Southern California and worked in med/surgery units at a number of hospitals, including Scripps Memorial. She also worked as a charge nurse on an open psychiatry unit at Mesa Vista Hospital. During those years, she took courses (as time and money allowed) and attained an Associate Degree in Nursing, followed by a BS in Nursing from Pepperdine University, and then her RN license. Subsequently, she was Director of Staff Development and Volunteer Services at Mesa Vista Hospital and was Director of Infection Control at San Luis Rey Psychiatric Hospital in Encinitas, CA.
She dearly loved her friends and family and her many cats. She was an avid back packer and camper, particularly in state and national parks in the west. She travelled throughout the world, visiting all seven continents and even ventured north of the Arctic Circle.
She was predeceased by her parents, her sister, JoAnn, and her half-brother, Kenneth McNinch. She is survived by her loving husband of almost 40 years, Robert A. Holmes, her nephew, Kenneth (Cathy) McNinch, Jr of Canton, TX and 5 grandnephews and grandnieces.
There will be celebrations of life at later dates in Yosemite National Park and In San Diego, CA. Inurnment is planned at the Miramar National Cemetery.
