Ann Chavanak, 97, formerly of McMechen, WV, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 5.
She was born in Benwood on June 18, 1928 to Walter and Victoria Jawor who emigrated to the U.S. from Poland to ensure a better life for their children and future generations. Ann graduated from Union High School in 1946 and married Andy Chavanak in 1948. They were married for 49 years before his passing. Ann was a skilled seamstress who crafted a number of beautiful quilts during her lifetime. She also had a prolific green thumb and enjoyed spending hours in her flower garden.
Ann was employed by Oglebay Park for 24 years in the cabin department before her retirement. A deeply religious person, she was a member of St. James Parish in McMechen and attended weekly Novena services for years.
She is survived by 2 daughters, Vickie Gotaskie of Callensburg, PA and Andrea (Jack) Jones of Scenery Hill, PA. Her grandchildren include Laura Headrick of Holiday, FL, Justin (Rebekah) Jones of Washington PA, Matthew Jones of Morningside (Pittsburgh), PA, and April (Gordon) Harrington, of Scenery Hill, PA. In addition, she is survived by great- grandchildren, Kylie and Brandon Jones as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death, besides her parents and husband were great-grandchild Tyler Jones, sisters Mary (Micky) Yanoscak, Velma (Doc) Gongola, Josephine (Frank) Gracik, and 2 brothers who died in infancy.
All services will be private. The family would like to thank the members of the Vitas Hospice for their unwavering care and kindness these past few months.
