DR. GEORGE STROBEL JR.
George Elwood Strobel, Jr., MD, 88, born November 9, 1936, passed away October 21, 2025, at Country Meadows in Wyomissing. George was born in Wheeling, WV, a son of the late George E. Strobel, Sr., MD and Lou Olive (White) Strobel.
George attended Linsly Military Academy in Wheeling, graduating in 1954. He attended Harvard College majoring in Chemistry and graduated Cum Laude from Harvard Medical School in 1962. He completed his Anesthesia Residency at University of Pennsylvania.
George proudly served his country during the Vietnam War, stationed at Camp Zama in Japan, serving as 1st LT US Air Force for three years. After serving, he traveled extensively in Russia, recalling fondly the incredible sights and people he encountered.
George was an excellent clinician, treating all with dignity and respect. He was an Anesthesiologist at University of Pennsylvania and later relocated to Reading for a long career at the Reading Hospital. He especially enjoyed teaching RNs in the Anesthesia program. He was generous in his time and assistance, especially to students and Medical Residents.
In 1994, George started a Pain Management Office in Shillington, which afforded him the ability to spend time with patients at his own pace and not under the strict timelines of organized practice. He ran the office as a Medical Office not as a business, always placing the welfare of his patients first. In 2007, George began his well-earned retirement.
George’s hobbies included gardening, classical music and skiing. He was an incredible skier traveling to Switzerland, California, Colorado and Utah. He was a warm and gentle man with a wonderful sense of humor. At Christmas, George enjoyed playing Santa Claus to patients and staff at the Reading Hospital. He was predeceased by his spouse, Tom Tyson, and a sister Mary Elizabeth Shenk, and is survived by cousins in West Virginia and a niece and nephew in Iowa.
Relatives and friends may call on Saturday, November 15, 2025, from 10:00 to 11:30AM for a Celebration of George’s life at Klee Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., One East Lancaster Ave., Shillington, PA. Interment will be private.
