BERNARD COYNE

Bernard Joseph Coyne of Wheeling passed away on Saturday, December 20, 2025 surrounded by his family.

He was born October 29, 1941 in Bridgeport, the son of the late Anthony and Florence Holler Coyne.

He was the beloved husband of Joann Tarr Coyne for 54 years; mother of Jennifer A. (Tim) Fraps of Bridgeville, PA, Brian J. (Becky) Coyne of Valley Grove, WV, and the late Bernard J. Coyne, II (Joey). Pop-Pop to seven granddaughters; Jordan (Ardie) Ball, Mia & Anna Fraps, Alexis (Zach Minch) Ashton, Hayden & Taylor Coyne, and Kaylee Pettingill. Three great-grandchildren, Ginny & Grayson Ball, Brielle Minch.

He is also survived by his sister, Constance M. Schuler of Bridgeport, OH. Preceded in death by his brothers Anthony F. Coyne, Thomas E. Coyne & sister, Catherine Ann Buettner.

Bernie graduated from Wheeling Central Catholic High School and immediately went into the workforce as a stockbroker until his retirement. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Kiwanis Club of Wheeling, Serra Club of Wheeling and a longtime member of St. Vincent de Paul Parish. In 1999, Bernie received the prestigious Bishops Cross by the Catholic Diocese of Wheeling- Charleston for his dedication and contribution to Catholic education.

He loved his CCHS Maroon Knights and well past his children attending the school, you could find him supporting the basketball and football teams. And, if you ran into him, he never passed up an opportunity to tell you a story.

They say it takes a village, and we couldn’t be more grateful to family, friends, neighbors and other community members who helped him in these last several years.

Visitation will be at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 154 Kruger Street, Wheeling on Monday, January 5, 2026 from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, January 6, 2026 at 10:00 am at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Wheeling, WV followed by interment at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
