DOROTHY “D.J.” SHELDON

Dorothy Jean “D.J.” Sheldon, passed away peacefully on December 6, 2025, at the age of 77, at WVU Medicine – Wheeling Hospital following a brief illness. Born on October 14, 1948, in Wheeling, West Virginia, D.J. lived a life characterized by simplicity, joy, and affection.

A graduate of Wheeling High School, Class of 1966, D.J. grew up in East Wheeling, later making her home in St. Clairsville, Ohio. Her work life began as a dedicated telephone operator for C&P Telephone Company in Wheeling. Later in life, she found joy in greeting customers as a greeter at Walmart in St. Clairsville, Ohio, where her warmth and friendly demeanor endeared her to many.

D.J.’s interests were as vibrant as her personality. She had an undeniable love for shopping, often jokingly acquiring everything off the rack. It was said that if she adored a particular style, she would own it in every available color. Her passion extended beyond clothing to her fondness for the color purple. This affection was so pronounced that she owned several purple vehicles over the years, including a cherished VW Bug that she loved to cruise around in.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 51 years, Victor “Vic” Sheldon, Jr., who cherished their life together; her brothers, Mark Mellor of Parkersburg, WV, and Matt Mellor of Naples, FL; as well as sisters- and brothers- in-law. Additionally, she leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews, all of whom will dearly miss her presence but carry forward her spirit of kindness and joy.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate D.J.’s life during a visitation on Thursday, December 11, 2025, from 2:00 p.m. until the funeral service at 4:00 p.m. at Altmeyer Funeral Home, located at 1400 Eoff Street, Wheeling, WV.
