DR. HOSSEIN YASSINI
Dr. Hossein Yassini, affectionately known as “Doc” to generations of families in Wheeling, devoted his life to medicine, service, and community. A deeply respected physician and beloved presence in the city, he will be remembered for his wisdom, compassion, dignity, and unwavering dedication to others. He passed away peacefully on March 21,2026 in Wheeling, W.VA.
Born in 1935 in Tehran, Iran, he was the third of five children born to Mahmoud Yassini and Soghra Lajevardi. From an early age, he distinguished himself through exceptional academic achievement. He graduated with highest honors as the top student in his high school class and ranked first in the national university entrance examination before choosing to pursue medicine at Tehran University of Medical Sciences School of Medicine.
His journey was marked not only by brilliance, but by discipline and determination. To support himself during medical school, he worked the midnight shift in his father’s bakery and taught in primary and secondary schools during the day. He graduated from medical school with highest honors in 1961.
After earning his medical degree and certification in pediatrics, Dr. Yassini began a new chapter in North America. In 1964, he traveled to Canada to continue his postgraduate training, completing his Pediatrics Residency at Ottawa Civic Hospital in Ontario, Canada, and The HSC Winnipeg Children’s Hospital in Manitoba, Canada, before continuing his medical training in Wheeling, West Virginia. By 1969, he was licensed to practice pediatrics and family medicine, and he chose Wheeling as the home for both his family and his lifelong medical practice.
For decades, Dr. Yassini served the Wheeling community with extraordinary dedication. He was known not simply as a doctor, but as “Doc,” a reflection of the affection and trust he inspired in those around him. He brought knowledge, steadiness, and genuine care to his patients and to the broader community he loved.
His professional accomplishments reflected both his excellence as a physician and his deep commitment to the medical profession. Throughout his career, he was active in organizations including the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Family Physicians, the Southern Medical Association, the Iranian American Medical Association, the Islamic Medical Association of North America, the West Virginia Chapter of the American Academy of Family Physicians, and the Ohio County Medical Society. He was also recognized in Marquis Who’s Who and the Directory of Medical Board Specialists in Family Practice, honors that reflected the esteem in which he was held by his peers.
Beyond his work in medicine, Dr. Yassini believed strongly in service to others, he supported charitable causes as an active member of the Osiris Shrine Temple long known for helping children through their network of specialized hospitals. He was a devoted member of Blue Lodge #5 and a 32nd Degree Mason of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite.
Those who knew Dr. Yassini also knew a man who embraced life with warmth and enthusiasm. He loved square dancing and enjoyed dancing twice a week, including with the Wheeling Reelers and the Ohio Valley Promenaders. He also found peace in nature and loved spending time in Oglebay Park and Wheeling Park in every season, a source of relaxation and quiet enjoyment throughout his life. He loved to travel and made annual trips abroad during his years in Wheeling.
He is lovingly remembered by his son, Patrick, also a medical doctor.; his daughter, Roya; his granddaughter, Kiana; and the many family members, friends, colleagues, and patients whose lives he touched.
His life was one of purpose, discipline, compassion, and grace. He gave so much to his family, his profession, and his community, and he will be remembered with immense love, gratitude, and admiration.
