DAVID MCKINLEY

He was born on March 28, 1947, in Wheeling, WV, the son of the late Johnson Bennett McKinley and Mildred Hamilton McKinley.

A seventh-generation West Virginian, David devoted much of his life to public service. He served fourteen years in the West Virginia House of Delegates, four years as Chairman of the West Virginia Republican Party, and twelve years representing West Virginia’s 1st Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives.

Before and throughout his public career, he was a proud civil engineer, the founder of McKinley & Associates, and a builder who believed deeply in West Virginia’s people and its future. He was a member of St. Matthews Episcopal Church in Wheeling, WV.

In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by one brother.

David is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Mary Gerkin McKinley; four children, David H. McKinley, Elizabeth (James) Boyle, Amy McKinley, and Bennett (Katy) McKinley; six grandchildren, Jackson M. Boyle, David J. McKinley, Thomas H. Boyle, Maxwell B. McKinley, Anne M. McKinley, and Louis B. McKinley; and three brothers.

Friends will be received on Sunday, April 26, 2026 from 12:00 PM – 3:00 PM at West Virginia Independence Hall, 1528 Market Street, Wheeling, WV. Services will be held on Monday, April 27, 2026 at 11:00 AM at St. Matthews Episcopal Church, 1410 Chapline Street, Wheeling, WV, with Reverend Josh Saxe and Reverend Mark Seitz officiating. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Wheeling, WV.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the David B. McKinley scholarship fund at West Virginia University’s Statler School of Engineering and sent to the WVU Foundation at PO Box 1650 in Morgantown, WV 26507-1650.
