JOHN TAGGART
John Taggart
John David Taggart, 77, of Wheeling, West Virginia, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at Park Health Center in St. Clairsville, Ohio.
Born on September 28, 1948, in Huntington, West Virginia, John was the beloved son of the late Calvin and Josephine Ruthers Taggart. From a young age, he carried a quiet strength and deep sense of loyalty that would define his life and the way he cared for those around him.
John proudly served his country as a member of M Company, 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. His courage and sacrifice were evident in the honors he received, including three Purple Heart Medals, the Combat Action Ribbon, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm. His service was a source of pride not only for John, but for his family and all who knew him. He was also a devoted member of the American Legion, where he found camaraderie among fellow veterans.
Beyond his distinguished military service, John was a man of simple pleasures and steadfast devotion. He took great pride in detailing his cars, ensuring each one gleamed as brightly as his stories about them. He cherished mornings spent at the coffee shop, sharing laughter and conversation with friends who became like family. Though his travels took him to many places, his heart always led him back home, where he treasured time spent with loved ones. He had a deep affection for all his animals and loved them very much.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his sister, Brenda Longwell.
He leaves behind his loving siblings, Belinda (Randy) McCardle and CJ (Julia) Taggart; along with several nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews who will carry forward his memory with pride and affection.
Friends will be received on Monday, April 6, 2026, from 4-7 p.m., and again on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, from 10:30 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m., at Kepner Funeral Home, 166 Kruger Street, Wheeling (304-242-2311). Interment will follow at Park View Memorial Gardens, where military honors will be conducted by the Moundsville Veterans Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ohio County Animal Shelter, the Wounded Warrior Project, or the Tunnel to Towers Foundation — causes that reflect John’s compassion for veterans and animals alike.
