MARY ELLEN LURTY
Mary Ellen Lurty
Mary Ellen Lurty, 89, of Wheeling, West Virginia, passed away peacefully on May 28, 2026, at Ruby Memorial Hospital, surrounded by love.
Born on November 18, 1936, in Wheeling, Mary Ellen lived a life rooted in faith, kindness, generosity, and deep connection to the people around her. She spent many years working as a dental hygienist in Cincinnati, Ohio, where patients knew her not only for her professionalism, but for the warmth, gentleness, and genuine care she showed to everyone she met.
Mary Ellen, Catholic by faith, believed deeply in caring for others, and that spirit showed in everything she did.
She found happiness in the simple and meaningful moments of life — afternoons spent with friends, reading a good book, and attending water aerobic classes at the Wellness Center for over 25 years. One of her favorite joys was always dancing to oldies music in the home her father built.
Mary Ellen had a way of making people feel welcomed, cared for, and loved. Her spirit continued after her passing through her donation to the Center for Organ Recovery and Education.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Rita and Robert Lurty Sr.; her brother, Robert Lurty Jr.; and her niece, Lisa Ann Lurty.
Mary Ellen leaves behind a loving family who will forever cherish her memory: LeAnn (Michael) Harris, John (Kim) Tankovits, Joseph Tankovits, Denise (Greg) Clayton, Sharon Hedinger, Janet Hedinger, Diane (Brad) Yeater, Lynda Parmley, Susan Lehasky, and Dianne (Oogie) Bolling. She is also survived by many grandchildren, great- grandchildren, extended family members, and dear friends whose lives were made brighter by knowing her.
A celebration of Mary Ellen’s life will be held at a later date, where family and friends will gather to honor the beautiful life she lived and the love she gave so freely.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Wheeling Central Catholic High School, a reflection of Mary Ellen’s lifelong devotion to faith, community, and helping others.
Mary Ellen will be remembered for her warm heart, infectious spirit, unwavering faith, and the love she shared so generously with those around her. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
