Gregory A. Byrd, of Wheeling, passed away at Wheeling Hospital on July 12, 2026, at the age of 75.
He was born on March 23, 1951, in Wheeling, W.Va., to the late Walter and Viola (Rozanski) Byrd. Greg is survived by his brothers, Bro. John F. Byrd, FMS, of Wheeling; and Richard (Patricia) Byrd of Bridgeport, Ohio, as well as several cousins.
Greg attended Blessed Trinity School and graduated from Wheeling Central Catholic High School in 1969. Also, in 1969, he and his bowling team, representing Wheeling Colonial Lanes, won the West Virginia Youth Bowling Association State Championship.
He earned an associate degree in business.
In his 20's and 30's he found employment at Shutler's Convenient Food Mart, People's Federal Bank, Stone & Thomas, and Kroger.
Greg possessed the gift of working with young people. He volunteered at Easter Seals and as a Big Brother (Big Sisters) to several teens, who noted he was fun to be with yet held them to a high standard of good behavior.
In the mid-1980's he moved to Connecticut where he managed a Wendy's restaurant in the Hartford metro area.
In the mid-1990's, Greg co-owned and operated GB's Market in Moundsville. Other employment included Coronet Foods, until its closure, and Walmart, until his retirement.
Greg enjoyed playing tennis, golf, chess, and lively card games with his circle of friends.
He was known for being a fast learner, possessing a quick wit, as a prankster, and being a loyal brother and friend. Greg often donated to several charities.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects on Thursday, July 30, beginning at 9 a.m. The Liturgy of the Word Service, officiated by Fr. Pen Manikyalarao, follows at 9:30 a.m. at Altmeyer Funeral Home, located at 1400 Eoff Street, Wheeling. Interment to follow at Greenwood Cemetery.
