Charles Frederick Gruber, Jr., 79, of Bridgeport, passed away peacefully at his residence on Saturday, September 12, 2026. He was born November 7, 1946 in Wheeling, WV, a son of the late Charles Frederick Gruber and Eleanor Francis Carney Gruber.
Chuck is survived by his wife, Patricia Rose Dawson Gruber, whom he married on June 6, 1984. He is also survived by two sons, Michael Patrick Gruber, of Morgantown, and Charles "Chad" Gruber III, of Bridgeport; a daughter-in-law, Julie Gruber, of Morgantown; his brother, Robert "Bob" Gruber and his wife Peggy, of Martins Ferry, OH; his sisters, Mary Pat Gruber, of Columbus, OH, and Judy Lewis, of Columbus, OH; and several nieces and nephews.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Joseph Gruber; two sisters, Jane Anne Kilpatrick, and Cindy Gruber; and the family cat, Betsy, who loved to beg him for treats.
Chuck served in the United States Airforce. He was a member at All Saints Catholic Church, and was on the finance council for over 35 years. He was also treasurer for several booster groups at Bridgeport High School.
Chuck loved spending time with his family, especially watching jeopardy with Pat. He enjoyed watching the WVU men's basketball games and traveling - including going on day trips, especially in the fall when the leaves change. He has traveled to all 50 states.
A gathering of friends and family will be held at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Avenue, Bridgeport, on Monday, September 21, 2026 from 4-7 p.m., with a Vigil Service held at 6:30 p.m. A Memorial Mass will be held at All Saints Catholic Church on Tuesday, September 22, 2026 at 10 a.m., with Father Walt Jagela as Celebrant.
