=Gordon C. Gordon, a.k.a. Charlie Gordon, a.k.a. John Paul Gordon, a man of many names, passed away on September 1, 2026, at the age of 67. Gordon was born on May 9, 1959, the son of Charles L. Gordon and Mary Makowski and stepmother Marietta.
In addition to his parents, Gordon was preceded in death by his brothers Douglas Gordon, Thomas Gordon, and Donald Gordon; and brothers- in-law Joe Young and Rick Mason.
Gordon leaves behind his wife Janet Young Gordon; his children Jonathan Gordon, Daniel (Eleanor) Gordon, Charles Benjamin "Ben" Gordon, and Emily Gordon; grandchild Charles Raymond Gordon; sisters Jerri Mason, Cathy Skrypek, Barb (John) Howell, Linda (Roger) Gordon Baker; sisters- in-law Mary Lee, Caroline, Janie, Jacqueline (Stanley) Kaniecki, Michael (Carol) Young, Jennifer (Dean) Decker, Jeff (Kathy) Young, Mark Young, Mollie Tolbert, Matthew Young, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Gordon was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. As a captain of the WVU football team in 1980, he was the first player on the new Mountaineer field that same year when John Denver sang "Country Roads." He was a coal miner since 1981 and started in the Bailey Mine in 1984. He was a football coach for the St. Michael's Mustangs. Gordon will always be remembered as a stalwart, selfless individual. He gave unconditional love; was a gentle, kind, and caring man; and will be dearly missed.
Family and friends will be received on Friday, September 4, from 5:00 p.m .until 8:00 p.m. and again on Saturday, September 5, from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. at Altmeyer Funeral Homes Wheeling Chapel, 1400 Eoff St. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, September 5, at 11:00 a.m. at the Cathedral of St. Joseph, 1300 Eoff St.
