William S. (Bill) Hannig Jr, 88, passed away Wednesday Nov. 4, 2026 in Wheeling. He was born Oct. 7, 1938 in Wheeling, the son of the late William S. Hannig Sr. and Elizabeth Speidel Hannig. He was also proceeded in death by his son Scott Hannig and Scott’s daughter Jamie.
Bill spent most of his working life in Wheeling as the owner/founder of Woodsdale Tire Inc. and later as manager of Tire America/NTB at the same site. Bill was fondly adored by the many friends he made through his lifelong love of sporting competitions. He started swimming at Linsly Military Institute and later added tennis, marathon running, downhill skiing, and his first love of bird hunting in Upper Michigan. Often described as "a character” by his athletic pals, Bill was quite the competitive spirit.
After retiring, he also lived in Deep Creek, MD, working at Wisp Resort where he earned the nickname “Wild Bill". In later years, he eventually found his way back to his roots in the Ohio Valley. He was notably a US Army veteran and a Catholic by faith.
Surviving are his son, William S. (Bill) Hannig III, and his wife, Barbara of Fairmont, WV; his daughter, Bethany Livingston, and her husband, Brad of Belmont, OH; his son, Todd Hannig of Wheeling; and daughter-in-law, Staci Hannig. Also surviving are his brother List Hannig Sr. of Beaufort, SC and his sister Stevie Hannig Baber (Ken) of Wheeling; his grandchildren Elijah and Isabella Hannig, Grayson and Carter Stanford, Scott Eric Hannig (Jessi), Christopher and Braden Hannig. He also had four great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the staff at Good Shepherd Nursing Home 3 North and Dr. William Mercer for their excellent and loving care during Bill's many years of residency.
Per the family’s wishes, there will be no service. Donations are kindly suggested to the Belmont County Animal Shelter in remembrance of his love for his canine companions.
