The Barnesville golf team had a season to remember.
Shamrock coach Jerry Robinson's squad turned in a remarkable 30-0 record in the Ohio Valley Golf League, winning the league title and capturing OVAC runner-up honors.
Senior Davey Wells was the leader of the team as he went on to earn All-Valley honors.
However, a young, talented Payne Johnson was also a key contributor to the team's success.
Johnson took home All-OVAC, All-OVGL, All-Times Leader and second team All-Eastern District honors last year as a sophomore.
"Last season, Payne was our No. 2 guy but at times, he was in the No. 1 position," Robinson said. "That experience has made taking over this year an easy transition for him.
"My biggest concern coming into this year was replacing the leadership of Davey Wells. He was the best leader I have ever coached, but Payne has a different leadership style. He leads by example and the hard work he puts in.
"He is only a junior but he is my main guy. We will go as far as he will take us."
Johnson has already gotten off to a solid start to the 2018 campaign as he earned second place in the Small School Division at the Waterford Invitational. Barnesville won the invite for the second straight year behind Johnson's runner-up card of 79.
"Right now his distance is his strength," Robinson said. "He has a short compact swing and gets max distance on it.
"He is a good student of the game. He is very intelligent and knows where to put the ball. He is always thinking about his next shot before he even shoots his current shot. He's always thinking ahead.
"He never gets too high or too low. He stays even keeled but he is a fierce competitor."
Johnson is not limited to just the golf course as he also excels on the court and in the classroom.
"He plays basketball and is an excellent student," Robinson said. "He is one of the top students in the school and he is looking at a bright future."
