As the River's girls golf team continues to grow, so does the talents of senior Sierra Knowlton.
Knowlton is a three-year district qualifier and is looking to make it four but it won't be easy as the competition is getting stronger and stronger every year.
"Sierra is a three-year letterman," River coach Justin Fetty said. "Our section and district is loaded with good players this year but I think that Sierra is capable of shooting in the 70's.
"I told her that once she broke 40, she would continue to do it at a faster pace. She did it in practice two years ago and is capable of doing it again.
"Just last week she broke the girls school record for a nine-hole round. She shot 1-over par."
On her way to a district qualification as a junior, Knowlton delivered a score of 92 at sectionals held at Carroll Meadows, a card good enough for 23rd overall.
Knowlton's work ethic is what sets her apart from the field. She played non-stop over the summer and even earned medalist honors at the Honeywell Tournament at the Moundsville Country Club.
"She worked hard this offseason," Fetty said. "She played in the Calloway Tour and a couple of junior tournaments, too."
Knowlton and three-year letterwinner Tabitha Straub were both named team captains this year and will be looked to as leaders for the Pilots.
"They are great kids and this is the first year in awhile we have been able to have team captains," Fetty said. "It usually goes to the senior with the most letters, so we have co-captains this year.
"I involve them in a lot of decision making to try to bring them into adulthood. I think coaching is about trying to get kids along in life and not just golf."
Knowlton was a member of the 2016 All-Times Leader Golf Team and could be heading towards another breakout campaign.
