St. Clairsville Enters Year With Young But Athletic Group
ST. CLAIRSVILLE — St. Clairsville girls’ basketball coach Stacey Agnew watched a bulk of last year’s roster collect their diplomas, leaving a lot of positions up for grabs this season with a young roster.
Gone from last year’s 7-15 squad include first team all-district standout Megan Malin, along with Katlyn Gray, Jocelyhnn Zucco, Madison Sadler and Lacy Tuttle.
“They worked hard,” Agnew said of last year’s seniors. “We probably lost 80 percent of our scoring and rebounding so we’ll be rebuilding a little bit to start this season.”
Despite the loss of some key contributors, Agnew believes this year’s squad will be fun to watch on the hardwood.
“We might actually be a little more athletic this season,” Agnew said.
Leading the Red Devils onto the floor will be senior Makenna Moran.
“Makenna is our most improved player and she’s back as a senior for us,” Agnew said. “She lettered for us last year as a junior.”
Senior Agnes Togbah will also vie for action.
Juniors Kesslee Barrera and Kentleigh Reed will also be relied upon this year for Agnew’s Red Devils.
“Kesslee lettered for us last year and Kentleigh is back, too,” Agnew said. “Kentleigh will be a good post player for us.”
Rounding out the junior class is Alexa Druzin and Lauren Powell, each of whom look to make a big impact on the floor.
“Alexa and Lauren will see a lot of playing time as guards,” Agnew said. “Alexa could even help us play inside a little bit.”
Anna Kain leads a trio of sophomores for St. Clairsville and is aiming for big things in the upcoming campaign.
“Anna is a sophomore who even started a few games as a freshman last year,” Agnew said. “She will start for us at one of the guard positions.”
Kendal Sall and Taylor East round out the sophomore class.
“Kendal is pushing for starting time this year,” Agnew said. “She had a good summer and she worked hard. She also ran cross country so she can run all night.
“Taylor played some last year so she is entering her second year for us.”
Six freshmen will be vying for varsity time this year and are coming along nicely.
“Kiya Kyer should see some playing time as a freshman,” Agnew said. “The rest of the freshman class could also push for time as the season goes along. They are all working hard and they are really catching on quickly.”
That freshman class consists of Claire Monteroso, Alaina Schumacher, Madelyn Morris, Aley Carter and Adalyn Bohall.
“Overall we’re trying to get back to .500,” Agnew said. “We’ll probably start out a little slower and then, hopefully, come on stronger as the season goes on. They’ve come a long way in just three weeks of practice and we’ve seen a lot of improvement already.”
Moriah Agnew will serve as the Red Devils’ assistant coach, while Caleb Agnew will coach the junior varsity club. Jamie Florence will lead the 8th grade squad and Steve Matthews will coach 7th grade.
