Awarding Local Businesses and Elevator Issues
Making the Most of a Tough Situation
Although Bishop Donahue High School held its last day of classes Friday, the sad occasion didn’t dampen the students’ spirit of giving. During their last hour as Bishops, several students made sure the school’s Blessing Box, an outdoor food pantry for the public, was fully stocked.
Sharing the Wealth
Truly embracing the community spirit of Show of Hands, not one but two presenters left the event Wednesday with checks to fund their ideas for downtown Wheeling.
During the Show of Hands event, four presenters pitched their ideas, after which those in attendance voted for the project they believed would best impact downtown Wheeling. The winner leaves with the money donated at the door.
The highest vote-getter was the Vigilant Books and Coffee project. Chuck Wood and Vera Uyehara, who own the former North Wheeling firehouse, pitched their idea to begin the transformation of the building into a coffee shop and bookstore. But noting that only two votes separated them and the runner-up, Bike Wheeling, Wood offered to split the $3,740 check with the new organization that plans to install bicycle racks in Wheeling and and promote bicycle safety and education.
Leaving a Legacy
The Cancer Center at Reynolds Memorial Hospital is now benefiting from several donation projects. The CRC received 10 supply bags from the Purse Project, hosted by The Marshall County Family Resource Network and Noble Energy.
A day later, the CRC received 25 necessary bags from “Laura’s Legacy,” a Relay for Life Team formed to honor Laura Huntsman who lost her fight against cancer.
An Up and Down Day
The City-County Building in downtown Wheeling apparently was experiencing some elevator issues on Thursday. One of the building’s two elevators featured a printed “Out of Order” sign — below which the words, “I think” were written in marker.
It’s unknown to this writer whether the scribe was legitimately unsure of the elevator’s status or simply making light of the situation. The lengthy wait for the other car to arrive suggested the latter, however.
