Proceed With Plan On Mine Retirees
Sometimes half a loaf is better than none — especially when that half could safeguard the pensions of thousands of retired coal miners.
Through no fault of their own, retirees who depend on the United Mine Workers of America pension program find themselves in jeopardy. The system could become insolvent within months.
After months of delay, a proposal for the federal government to rescue the system has been put forth by Sens. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va. and Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., along with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.
Now, however, that may be sidetracked by another plan some senators are promoting to make changes to all multi-employer pension plans.
That may or may not be a good idea — but it should not be allowed to delay action to help the retired miners. The plan by McConnell, Manchin and Capito should be enacted immediately.
