Report on VA Hospital Safety
Earlier this year, it was disclosed that several patients have died under suspicious circumstances at the Department of Veterans Affairs hospital in Clarksburg. The information did not come from the VA but rather, from an attorney suing the agency on behalf of the family of one of the deceased veterans.
Since then, both the VA and law enforcement officials investigating the deaths have released little information about the case.
Now, U.S. Sens. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., and Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., have introduced a bill that would require the VA to submit reports on patient safety and the quality of care at the agency’s medical centers throughout the nation.
Capito and Manchin are right: Veterans and their families deserve to know about safety and care quality at VA facilities. The bill should be enacted as soon as possible.
Veterans and their families in our area deserve to know more about the Clarksburg situation. Going forward, the VA owes it to others to be transparent about its care.
