Bring Back Cancer Research Classic

After 13 years in which the annual event grew to more than live up to its name, the Cancer Research Classic basketball tournament will not be held next year, its founder, Dr. Gregory Merrick, revealed last week.

“Due to an enormous amount of uncertainties, there will be no CRC in 2021,” Merrick said, without going into detail.

“We hope the event will re-emerge in the future,” Merrick added.

So do we. The CRC has been recognized as one of the best showcases in the nation for high school basketball players and teams. It has become one of the more popular events held at WesBanco Arena in Wheeling.

Though Merrick did not explain factors that led to his decision, it is difficult to imagine any obstacles that could not be overcome. We encourage Merrick and others involved in the program to find a way to resume staging the tournament — possibly even in 2021.

“We could re-emerge bigger and stronger than ever,” Merrick said last week. We certainly hope so.
