When the Knowlton Covered Bridge in Monroe County collapsed last year, it may have been a blessing in disguise. County commissioners had obtained about $900,000 in state funds to repair the span, but it failed before the work could be done.
To commissioners' credit, they decided to replace the bridge. Now, instead of a repaired structure, there will be a brand-new covered bridge that should last for generations to come.
On Monday, county Engineer Amy Zwick told commissioners the new span will not be suitable for vehicles. It will be open for pedestrian and, perhaps, bicycle use only. For many years the old bridge's load had been restricted, too.
It attracted visitors in part because of a small park, with a picnic area, beside the bridge.
If finances permit, commissioners should consider making some improvements to the park. Comparatively few dollars spent on the park could make it a more inviting complement to the bridge itself.
