Stay Safe While Out on the Water

1 min read

It is natural that in our area, boating is a popular recreational pastime. With spring on the horizon, owners of watercraft large and small are ready for a new season.

Already, we have been reminded by a tragedy of the absolute necessity of being careful while boating. On Sunday, a Cleveland man drowned at the Cadiz Reservoir. He and two others had been fishing from a small boat when he fell into the water. An investigation into just what went wrong is in progress.

Until the exact cause of the man's death is known, speculating on what happened would not be prudent. Still, by definition, we know some rule of safe boating was broken.

If you own a boat -- or plan to borrow, rent or buy one this year -- spend a few minutes and a few dollars ensuring your craft and you are safe.

Safe boating rules can be found online. For the most part, they are common sense. Carry and use personal flotation devices. Don't consume alcohol while operating a boat. You get the idea. Use your head while boating this year -- and have a good time.
