In all likelihood, the Pittsburgh woman who left her two dogs trapped in her car with the windows up last Tuesday did not realize the danger they were in. People passing by the vehicle did, and called the Ohio County Sheriff's Department.
By the time deputies got to the car, parked in a lot at The Highlands, the animals appeared to be in severe distress. The car's interior had reached 108 degrees.
Fortunately, deputies were able to rescue the dogs. Their owner was arrested and charged with animal cruelty.
We hear of cases such as this -- and, more rarely, of children endangered in similar circumstances -- on a regular basis during the warmer months.
Why? How much common sense does it require to understand that hot vehicles and pets or children are recipes for tragedy?
Use your head. If you don't, you deserve to have to pay a stiff fine.
