Being Flexible On In-Person Meetings

Like many other public bodies in our area, Steubenville City Council has not really been meeting during the past few months. Because of COVID-19, they and other city officials have been connecting electronically.

That may end soon. During their electronic session last week, council members agreed they need to begin work as soon as possible on the municipal budget for next year. There also seemed to be a consensus that the only way to do that properly is by in-person meetings.

Absolutely. At least for now, precautions such as physical distancing and use of face masks may be necessary — but sitting down, face to face, is the best way to handle complicated discussions such as those on the budget.

That said, some city officials’ ages and health circumstances may make in-person meetings risky. They should be permitted to continue joining budget meetings electronically.
