Don't blame COVID-19 for the delay in opening Buckeye South Elementary School for the new academic year. Flooding, not the virus, forced the change.
Fortunately, a large number of teachers and other staff were at the school in Tiltonsville last Friday, when about two inches of rain fell. A clogged drain on the roof poured water into the school. Employees were able to salvage some equipment.
Officials hope to hold classes next week -- but where that will happen is a question. It may be that the school is unusable, at least for now.
State officials should offer financial aid to the Buckeye Local School District. Comparatively few dollars in state aid could make a world of difference in getting the new school year off to a good start.
Having planned well to cope with COVID-19, Buckeye Local teachers and staff should not be stymied by bad weather.
