Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine is right in a comment he made earlier this month. "We should all be sick and tired of picking up the newspaper and seeing the things that we see literally every day -- our fellow Ohioans injured or killed through senseless violence."
We suspect most Buckeye State residents are upset about street violence, which seems more and more to harm innocent children. Only about a week ago in Columbus, someone opened fire on a car. Among those wounded were a a 2-year-old and a 4-year-old. A 5-year-old was hurt when the car crashed.
DeWine -- who is a staunch proponent of Second Amendment rights -- has proposed legislation that could curb some violence. A key piece of his plan is tougher prison sentences for convicted felons who use guns to commit new crimes.
Also included are new provisions intended to improve the background check process for those attempting to buy guns.
Action on DeWine's proposal has stalled in the General Assembly for several months. That is not surprising, given attention focused on COVID-19.
But vicious criminals have not taken a break during the epidemic. As the governor noted, there are frequent reports of shootings, many involving innocent bystanders. Clearly, state officials need to do something to curb violence -- of all kinds -- in Ohio.
