Eleven Ohio County residents addressed the Ohio County Board of Education this past week over its decision to partially defund the Ohio County Public Library.
Here is some of what they had to say:
Former school board member Jeanne Finstein: "The school district and the community at large stand to lose more than would be gained by reallocating the funding."
Laurie Ruberg: "It is not just about the library, but about how the school board thinks about the library."
John Hargleroad said he was "dismayed" by the board's decision, and that the board has offered "no cogent reason for it."
Wheeling historian Margaret Brennan worries the move will make Wheeling appear unfriendly to those who value education: "To think it won't make a difference -- it will."
We agree with those concerns.
Outside of our local hospitals, the Ohio County Public Library is the only organization in this community that serves every resident. Whether you're 3 years old or 83 years old, the library has something to offer.
To put that in jeopardy over locker rooms and sports fields should be unacceptable to any person who values education.
We encourage all residents who value the library for the services it provides and the role it fills in our community to continue to pressure the Ohio County Board of Education to restore its full funding.
