Keep Tariffs on Steel

1 min read

With talks underway with the EU, the Biden administration should hold firm on keeping tariffs on steel imported to the U.S.

Since 2018, the Trade Expansion Act has imposed 10% and 25% tariffs on some aluminum and steel imports. EU exports of steel to the U.S. are almost 24 times as much as what North America sends to the E.U.

In Ohio, the steel industry accounts for about 39,000 jobs. But employment isn't the only factor to consider, as U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan, D-Ohio, points out.

"As we move to wind and solar and electric vehicles, we want to green the planet. So we should use the greenest steel and the cleanest steelmaking process in the world, and that's here in the United States."

Why in the world would the Biden administration want to jeopardize American jobs and further shift steel production to a less environmentally friendly region? If both the health of our planet and the wellbeing of the people living on it are truly priorities for Biden and crew, the answer to the E.U.'s request to relax steel tariffs is a simple one: No.
