No one likes to be inconvenienced by a detour on their regular route to work, but the closure of the Washington Avenue Bridge this month is necessary to ensure the span remains viable until a more comprehensive renovation can take place.
The span, which connects National Road to Interstate 70, is a main artery to Wheeling University and WVU Medicine Wheeling Hospital.
It has fallen into disrepair over the years, with an inspection several years ago leading to the weight limit being lowered. The bridge is scheduled to be replaced in the coming years, but a concern with its current stability has led to immediate repairs being necessary.
Also impacted by the closure are first responders. Wheeling Fire Chief Jim Blazier said his department is prepared.
"Because a reduced weight limit on the bridge was implemented some time ago, we have already adjusted the running schedules to address response times," he said. "We will continue to do that. We also have alternate response routes and contingency plans for unforeseen traffic events so we do not increase response times for that section of Wheeling."
Securing the bridge's safety is key while the larger replacement project is planned. City officials need to keep a close eye on the span until that happens.
