Haught Deserving Of Milken Honor

There are not many scenarios more rewarding than to see a local person recognized and honored for doing what they love. The latest example came last week when McNinch Primary School first-grade teacher Heather Haught was named a Milken Educator, a national honor recognizing her as a model for the state and the nation.

The award — one of only 60 nationwwide — includes a cash prize of $25,000 and also a trip to Los Angeles to take part in an education forum.

Haught said she will use her prize to enrich her classroom and school — and also the students at McNinch.

“I will make sure that it goes to the kids and the whole school. We’ll work together as a staff, find what we need, and go from there,” she said in accepting the honor.

Haught truly is one of those living her dream. She’s been a teacher for 12 years and said she loves making a difference in her students’ lives.

That’s the type of educator we need more of in West Virginia.

“Heather Haught is a sterling example of compassion and commitment,” West Virginia Superintendent of Schools Clayton Burch said. “She is committed to fostering a strong foundation of learning among her first-grade students … and illustrates such compassion as she engages families in the education of their children. … We are proud of her leadership and the depth of her commitment to the children and families of her community.”

“Heather Haught understands that developing lifelong learners starts with the whole child,” said Stephanie Bishop, vice president of the Milken Educator Awards. “Through her commitment to meeting students where they are and dedication to parent outreach and teacher leadership across the state and district, she is creating a well-rounded environment for students to succeed.”

That’s excellent to hear, and will serve her students well.

Starting at $2.99/week.
