Tuesday will be a big day in the city of Wheeling. Not only will Mayor Glenn Elliott present his annual State of the City address at Wheeling Island Hotel-Racetrack-Casino, but that morning the West Virginia Division of Highways will open bids for the long-awaited Downtown Wheeling Streetscape project.
The $30-million Streetscape project is a big key in remaking the downtown. Seven years in the making, the work will include a total overhaul of downtown streets and sidewalks, with the goal to make Wheeling a more modern, driveable and walkable city.
There are some concerns with the bids given current inflationary pressures. Let us hope the bids come back at an acceptable level and that the project can get underway later this year, and finish by the end of 2024.
