For 24 years, Ohio Valley residents have gathered each August to run a race that is more than just another 5K; as race director Ron Green says, it's the "race for a reason."
The first reason was to honor the memory of Green's sister, Debbie, who died from cancer as a child. The second was to raise money to help families dealing with childhood cancer.
Since the event's inception, Green said the Debbie Green Memorial 5K has raised about $1.5 million for those suffering from childhood cancers.
The 25th running is set for this weekend, and Green has announced it will be the last.
"I don't want anybody coming there sad," Green said during a dinner in his honor Thursday. "This is a great hometown event that means a lot to the community and I want everybody to be happy, whether it's the last race or not, I don't want any sad faces. … This is a happy ending. From the bottom of my heart, I'm forever grateful."
This was more than just an event for Green, and it showed in how hard he worked. Thank you, Ron.
