Helping Feed The Hungry

2 min read

As Mountain State hunters enjoy their time in the woods this season, many are likely planning to take home their harvest for distribution among family and friends. Deep freezers will be filled all over the state. But there is another option, and one that can help feed those in need.

"Hunting is a great reason to get into the woods, enjoy our beautiful state and put healthy protein in the freezer," said Kaylee Pollander, wildlife biologist for the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources. "With the variety of game available in West Virginia, there is something for everyone."

Through the DNR's Hunters Helping the Hungry Program, hunters can donate their venison by taking deer to processors that have partnered with the state. Over the past 30 years, the program has processed 28,145 deer for a total of 1,070,504 pounds of venison donated to families and individuals in need.

Processors who would like to participate can call the DNR's District 3 office at 304-924-6211. And hunters who want to find out how to help can check here: https://wvdnr.gov/hunting/hunters-helping-the-hungry/. A link on that page leads to participating processors. The closest processors to our region are in Wood County, where Slider's Processing and Smoked Meats can help you get your harvest to those who need it most.

Our wild and wonderful woods have so much to offer.

As you are enjoying them this season, remember they also offer you the chance to help someone else.
