Members of West Liberty University's Board of Governors made the right selection Wednesday when they named Cathy Monteroso as interim president.
Her time at the campus as a faculty member, a dean and most recently as interim provost give her the credentials and the credibility to move the university forward.
Monteroso, a 14-year employee at West Liberty, will begin her new duties on Jan. 1. She replaces W. Franklin Evans, whose contract was not renewed following more than a year of turmoil at the campus.
"Experience, qualifications, professionalism, history with our faculty and staff and our Board of Governors," Rich Lucas, chair of the BOG, said in describing why the board unanimously backed Monteroso. "It's her dedication, first, and her willingness to serve the university in any capacity she's been asked. She always comes out with a great result."
That's just what West Liberty University needs right now -- a leader that puts the institution first. Another bonus is that, with her hire, Monteroso becomes the first woman to be selected as the university's president.
"I believe in this institution and I believe we have a lot of really positive things going on, and I'm just thrilled to be able to help lead those initiatives we have," she said.
The entire West Liberty University family should be thrilled, as well.
"We know she's ready. I think the Board of Governors is extremely confident she will fill the interim seat and carry the professionalism and university banner," Lucas added.
